Boston is a 2 year old ram by Cairnhill Maximilien out of the brown ewe Halsham Persephone, with the pedigree name Heritage Orio. Initially he stood at John Bark's Willowbridge flock in Boston alongside his brother. Memorably, at point of sale he slipped out of his pen and hid in a field with a flock of black Hebrideans before being discovered (below) and loaded for the short trip to Norfolk.
With a fleece of brown caramel with honey blonde highlights, he carries a pair of recessive brown genes, occurring in less than 5% of livestock so unusual in this breed. He arrived at fourteen months old (below) with a fairly uniform colour.
In a mere four months, he had turned into a chunky brown bear! He is currently blocky and square, with thick legs well-earthed to the ground. In full fleece he looks to have a high rear end, and is visually elongated by his vast dark brown collar, so his shape looks a little odd just now as he is growing on. He moves like a tank.
It helps to have some perspective of the Ouessant size against a human scale, where even a bulking-out young ram looks teeny.
The most watchful of the ram flock, he's shy, with elegant manners. Undoubtedly he would say 'please' and 'thank you' if he could. He almost always stands behind other rams or ewes, as the photos always show.
He produced offspring as a ram lamb, and has been bred recently to just one brown ewe. Brown genes in both sire and dam guarantee a brown lamb. Boston's sire line includes mostly white stock, with the brown gene coming via Danaway Merci, while his dam line includes five out of seven animals registered as brown in the first three generations back. His pedigree includes Cairnhill, Spered Breizh, Barak and Halsham prefixes.
