Chase is by Cairnhill Galette out of a Cammall ewe. Bred by Claire Occardi of Skipton, North Yorkshire, with the Mallerdale prefix, initially he stood at the Danaway flock in Cumbria. His grandfather was the well-known sire Spered Briezh Cracquelin registered in both France and the UK.
Aged 4, and the senior ram at Fair Green, Chase is an impressive ram with stature and presence. Characterised by a high head carriage, his noble set of horns make him look benevolent and dignified. Except when he arrived complete with stitches (below) following a disagreement with his relative and former buddy, Ulpha.
He is towards the upper end of the breed scale for height, with beautiful proportions - although his photographs make him look enormous, because much of that is bountiful fleece. Once sheared, he looks altogether sleeker and more streamlined.
Charmingly, he has tiny pink flecks on his nose, and flickers his whiskers when he comes up to say hello. Chase likes people and straw bales. He dislikes the teak wooden chair I put by his paddock (he out-stared it for a whole hour). Happy, easy to handle, top ram and he knows it. Chase has a touch of James Bond about him - glamorous, tough, courteous, cool. His 'come hither' eyes and the big bad-boy horns are a hit with the ladies.
Chase's phenotype is white, derived from the Agouti White and Tan colour gene. Often his face is covered in dark brown mineral lick 😂 He has a nice straight nose in profile, not particularly Roman, and in winter carries a heavy collar of long fleece at the throat. He's sired three ram lambs and a ewe before coming to us, all white. The daughter, Danu, is also here at Fair Green. Chase's sire line is exclusively white going back three generations, through Spered Breizh and Lutins Du Montana lines, with some black and brown genes further back. His dam lines are black through three generations and black and brown in the fourth. He is guaranteed to carry the black gene, and might also carry brown.
He's got a good movement, always happy to break into a trot and dash over to greet you. Although he takes his senior ram status seriously, he's a relaxed boy, easy to trust in the field.
